Comfortable win for Mumbai

IPL7, MATCH 36—Big stand between Simmons, Rayudu beats Sunrisers.

Fifties from Rayudu and Simmons did the trick for Mumbai.

Lendl Simmons and Ambati Rayudu hit half-centuries to lead Mumbai Indians to an emphatic win over Sunrisers Hyderabad. The victory, Mumbai Indians' third in nine matches, kept the defending champions' campaign barely alive. Sunrisers Hyderabad were tied down after choosing to bat for all but the last two overs of their innings. David Warner helped his side take 33 off those two to push the total to 157, but it hardly mattered, as Simmons and Rayudu put on 130 runs for the second wicket in 14.3 overs to haul Mumbai Indians home with eight balls to spare.

Mumbai Indians lost CM Gautam second ball of the second over to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, but Simmons and Rayudu kicked on after a sedate start. The release came when Irfan Pathan was brought on following a couple of tight overs each from Dale Steyn and Bhuvneshwar. Simmons, who had tried to slog Steyn without success, found Irfan's pace to his liking, and slammed him for a couple of sixes and a four.

Rayudu welcomed Amit Mishra with a charge and a straight six, and Mumbai Indians weren't looking back, with the boundaries coming regularly. Simmons did not let the legspinners settle and swung Karn Sharma for a four and a six. Rayudu gave the same treatment to Irfan as the allrounder went for 29 in two overs.

Shikhar Dhawan went back to Steyn in the 13th over but Mumbai Indians were approaching 100 by that time. Rayudu and Simmons took the fast bowler for a four each. Sunrisers had a chance in the next over but KL Rahul put down a top-edged skier off Simmons at deep midwicket with the batsman on 59 and the team score on 110. Simmons and Rayudu fell in successive overs for 68 each eventually but the game was almost over by then.

Dhawan felt Sunrisers were about 20 runs short on what he had called a good batting surface at the toss as he chose to bat. Dhawan himself scratched around for a while before being bowled by a full inswinger from Lasith Malinga. Rahul ran himself out going for a non-existent single but Aaron Finch had looked in nice touch all along.

He drove Corey Anderson crisply down the ground for fours and went after Pragyan Ojha, lofting and driving the left-arm spinner repeatedly through the off side for boundaries. Warner joined Finch and hit the odd boundary as well but the pair was not able to dominate amid some tight bowling from Harbhajan Singh and Jasprit Bumrah.

Finch holed out off Malinga in the penultimate over for 68 off 62 but Warner stepped up and launched the fast bowler for a couple of sixes. He ended the innings with successive fours off Kieron Pollard to finish on 55 off 31. Given Sunrisers' reputation of successfully defending moderate totals at their home ground, 157 did not appear to be an easy chase, but Rayudu and Simmons made it look so.

Miller, Sandeep set up massive win for Kings XI

Kings XI Punjab beat Bangalore by 32 runs to gave them sole occupancy of the top spot in the IPL table.

When the two teams last met, Sandeep Sharma had dismissed Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli in the same over and set the tone for a convincing win for Kings XI Punjab. On Friday, Royal Challengers Bangalore were chasing rather than setting a target, but the same set of characters went through an eerily similar routine, right down to the questionable umpiring decision that did for Kohli, in an over that sent Kings XI Punjab on their way to a 32-run win that gave them sole occupancy of the top spot in the IPL table.

An innings of 66, off just 29 balls, from David Miller had powered Kings XI to a total of 198. If any team could chase it, though, it was Royal Challengers. They had been the only team to chase a 200-plus total on this ground, and they had done it against the same opponents, back in 2010. They faced a similar ask this time, and needed their top order to fire.

Sandeep had troubled Gayle with his swing right through his first over, beating him twice before failing to grab a difficult caught-and-bowled chance off the last ball. First ball of his second over, though, Sandeep had his man. The ball swung away from Gayle, who swung hard at it and edged to the keeper.

In walked Kohli. In Dubai, he had been out second ball to a debatable lbw decision, with the ball appearing to be headed down the leg side. This time, Sandeep dismissed him first ball, caught behind down the leg side. There was a sound as ball passed bat, but replays suggested the ball had brushed the ground just as Wriddhiman Saha scooped it up with the webbing of his right glove. Royal Challengers were 8 for 2, and 199 looked like 299.

They were never going to get close after that, and Sandeep dented them once again with the wicket of Parthiv Patel in his next over. Royal Challengers' subsequent struggles were encapsulated by Yuvraj Singh, who kept getting beaten by the spinners during a painful 11-ball stay that ended when he gave debutant offspinner Shivam Sharma his first wicket in senior cricket. It was 50 for 5 at that point, but AB de Villiers ensured Bangalore reached a respectable score with a 26-ball 53.

When his team was asked to bat, Kings XI captain George Bailey said it was hard to tell what a good score would be, considering the flat pitch and short boundaries at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. His team never had to worry about their run rate, though, after they reached 64 for 1 after 6 overs - it was the most they had made during the Powerplay this season.

Virender Sehwag had played some aggressive shots in that time, but hadn't really exploded. But the bowlers had helped Kings XI along, bowling eight extra balls in those first six overs. Amidst all that, Mitchell Starc and Albie Morkel had also discovered that this pitch had a little more help for the bowlers than it usually does, and were getting their cutters to grip and deviate.

Yuzvendra Chahal, the legspinner, also settled in nicely, and dismissed both Sehwag and Glenn Maxwell. Kings XI were scoring rapidly, but they were losing wickets. But they still had Miller, and he was in terrific form.

On this day, Miller only hit three sixes, but he was hitting the ball cleanly along the ground placing it with rare precision. He hit Varun Aaron for three fours in the 10th over, and smashed Starc for a six and two fours in the 13th.

The bowler who suffered most, though, was Harshal Patel, who would eventually finish with figures of 2 for 56 in three overs. The Haryana seamer had conceded three fours in his first over - one each to Mandeep, Sehwag and Maxwell - and had taken a 10-over sabbatical before coming back on. Immediately, Miller laid into him, clouting him over a leaping deep midwicket for six, dumping him back over his head and onto the roof of the stadium, and pulling him behind square for four, off his first three deliveries. Wriddhiman Saha got into the act in the same over, slog-sweeping him for six.

Miller's dismissal in the next over saw Punjab lose some momentum, at least relative to what had gone before. They only made 28 off the last 21 balls of their innings, and Royal Challengers seemed to have done well to keep them to under 200. All of that, however, ceased to matter after that one over from Sandeep. to matter after that one over from Sandeep.

Sunrisers unfazed by Royals' 'trick'ery

MATCH 30: Hyderabad survived Shane Watson's hat-trick and defended a small total with aplomb on Thursday night.

BIG WICKET: Sanju Samson troops back to the hut.

AHMEDABAD: Sunrisers Hyderabad's strength in bowling came to the fore as they defended a small total to end Rajasthan Royals' four-match winning streak in IPL-7 on Thursday. Restricted to 134/9 after they were sent in to bat - thanks to Shane Watson's hat-trick - Sunrisers shot out Royals for 102 in 19.5 overs for a 32-run triumph.

Swing bowler Bhuvnenshwar Kumar (4/14) claimed the lion's share of wickets, although three of his came at the fag end of the chase, when the batsmen were looking to clear the boundary every ball. Dale Steyn (2/31) stood out with another blinding spell, while leggie Amit Mishra, though wicket-less, zipped through his four for just 13 runs and deprived the pursuit of momentum in the crucial middle overs.

On a run of four victories, Royals would have suppressed a snigger at the score they had held back Sunrisers to after sending them in. But the 135-run target appeared bigger when Watson’s team were reduced to 41/4 inside seven overs, each of Hyderabad’s starting quartet picking up a wicket.

Ajinkya Rahane (0) was caught off the third ball of the chase, off Bhuvneshwar. Opener Karun Nair (12) struck confident boundaries before Steyn’s furious pace took his outside edge, while Sanju Samson (16), having struck the premier fast bowler in the world for a six back over his head, was beaten and bowled by Karn Sharma’s leg-spin.

WARNER'S DIRECT HIT

Watson was the fourth batsman out when he was caught behind off Moises Henriques. Ninety were needed in 72 balls as the last recognized pair, Steven Smith and Stuart Binny, resumed in the middle. Ojha missed a stumping of Smith – off Karn – when the batsman was on 7.

But the promising 37-run partnership was nipped when Warner ran-out Binny with a superlative pick-up and direct hit from deep mid-wicket, leaving Royals 54 to win from five overs. With the pressure mounting, Smith went after Steyn for the big hit, but top-edged and was caught by Pathan on the off-side to effectively end the pursuit. The rest fell in a heap.

Watson’s hat-trick, Rajat Bhatia’s slow deception (3/23) and some bizarre running beween the wickets had earlier spelt doom for Sunrisers, as they wasted a brilliant Shikhar Dhawan start to toil to 134. Dhawan struck seven delightful boundaries in his 20-ball 33, but was bowled when he was cramped for room trying to cut Watson.

This was at the end of the fourth over and Hyderabad were on 37. As an exodus of batsmen began, Sunrisers managed to score just 84 in the 14 remaining overs and Dhawan remained their highest scorer.

WATSON'S HAT-TRICK

The next to go was Aaron Finch (9), caught brilliantly by Rahane running in from deep midwicket. And still Warner remained in the dugout, preceded as he was by Lokesh Rahul (18) and then Ojha (17). When Warner did come out - following Rahul being bowled by a Rajat Bhatia slower ball - he was stumped off a Pravin Tambe googly.

Another Bhatia slower ball dismissal of Ojha meant that Rajasthan’s support cast had yanked down Sunrisers – from their rapid start – to 86/4 after 12 overs. Watson had cleaned up Dhawan in the fourth over. When he returned for the 17th his first two balls fetched him the latter two-thirds of a hat-trick – Royals’ second in successive matches after Tambe’s feat against Kolkata.

Watson’s latter two victims were Henriques, playing in Darren Sammy’s stead, who was caught at long-off by Rahane, and Karn, who nicked to the ‘keeper. A couple of run-outs, including a bizarre third-attempt direct hit that claimed Mishra, spelt the end of a strange innings. Sunrisers had 50 on the board at the end of the Powerplay. The next 14 overs saw the addition of just 84 more. As it happened, they were more than enough.      [CYCIPL]

Did you know?

Glenn Maxwell's strike-rate against R Ashwin is 266.66 in the IPL - 64 runs off 24 balls!

Maxwell-led Punjab pummel Chennai

Glenn Maxwell plundered a 38-ball 90 to drive Kings XI to the top of the table.

POWER PLAY: Glenn Maxwell

Cuttack (IANS):
Australia’s explosive batsman Glenn Maxwell powered the Kings XI Punjab to a comprehensive 44-run win over Indian Premier League (IPL) table toppers Chennai Super Kings at the Barabati Stadium here Wednesday.

Chasing the highest total of the tournament of 231/4, the Super Kings could only manage 187/6 in their 20 overs after electing to field. With the victory, the Punjab outfit have once again risen to the top of the table with 12 points from seven games.

Maxwell drove his team to a mammoth total with his magnificent 38-ball knock of 90 runs. In the process, the Victorian batsman smashed six boundaries and eight massive sixes all over the stadium.

Maxwell came in after opener Mandeep Singh (3) got out cheaply but Virender Sehwag played a nice cameo of 30 runs for his side at the start of the innings. After Sehwag got out, with the score at 38/2 in the sixth over, it was a Maxwell show all the way.

The Australian was given good support by southpaw David Miller (47) and later by compatriot George Bailey, who also hammered an outrageous 13-ball 40 at an incredible strike rate of 307.69.

Maxwell and Miller struck the all-important 135-run third wicket partnership to propel the team to 182 before getting out. The Melbourne born missed out on his century when he hit Mohit Sharma straight to deep mid-wicket where he was caught (182/4).

BAILEY BLAST

But skipper Bailey made sure the team went well past the 200-mark to post a supremely challenging title for the previous table toppers.

Maxwell did not leave any Super Kings bowler with decent figures as all of them went for at least nine runs per over with only Sharma scalping two wickets.

In reply, the Chennai outfit had a poor start, losing explosive opener Dwayne Smith (4) in the first over. New Zealander Brendon McCullum (33) tried forging a partnership with Suresh Raina (35) first and later with Ravindra Jadeja (17) before running himself out.

South African Faf du Plessis (52) and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni scored a 61-run fifth-wicket partnership but the asking rate kept increasing and even the firepower of Dhoni, who got out for 21, wasn’t enough to take the two-time IPL champions to their target.

Mithun Manhas (8 not out) and Ravichandran Ashwin (11) took the team to 187/6 before running out overs.

Though he did not take any wicket, left arm spinner Akshar Patel was the most economical bowler for the Kings XI, giving away only 28 runs from four overs while Mitchell Johnson clinched two wickets.

Mumbai win ill-tempered game

MATCH 27: Rohit Sharma's team prevailed by 19 runs over Bangalore in a heated encounter on Tuesday.

STARC RAVING MAD: It was actually Pollard who flung his bat at the bowler.

A calculated charge from Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard amid indisciplined bowling from Royal Challengers Bangalore set up Mumbai Indians' victory. Rohit and Pollard came together at 84 for 4 in the tenth over and accelerated late to add 97 in the next ten. Combined with 25 extras, including 12 wides, it was well beyond Royal Challengers' reach, though they had reached 94 for 1 in the tenth over. Harbhajan Singh then claimed Chris Gayle for 38, and Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers went within an over of each other as the visitors' challenge melted away.

With one side of the ground smaller than the other, and a furiously quick outfield, both sides wanted to chase, and Royal Challengers did. Mumbai Indians' top order of Ben Dunk, CM Gautam and Ambati Rayudu could not really get going on a pitch with pace and bounce, but the numerous extras served up by the Royal Challengers quick bowlers ensured the run-rate stayed reasonably high. The visitors hit back with quick wickets as the halfway mark of the innings approached, when Pollard joined Rohit.

With only Aditya Tare and the bowlers to come, the pair was forced to play cautiously for some time. The first five overs of the partnership produced only 29, despite some poor fielding. With about six overs left, Rohit and Pollard gradually opened up. Amid throwing his bat at Mitchell Starc in an ugly flare-up, Pollard contributed 43 off 31.

Rohit cut loose in the penultimate over bowled by Varun Aaron. A couple of top-edges flew fine for six, there was a straight hit for four and a sliced six over deep cover as 24 came off the over. Rohit lofted Starc for four over extra cover off the last ball of the innings to surge to 59 off 35 as Mumbai Indians ended on 187 for 5.

GAYLE GETS GOING

Gayle and Parthiv Patel responded with an opening stand of 53 in five overs. Parthiv did the early running before Gayle took Pawan Suyal for four successive boundaries in the third over. Rohit turned to Harbhajan, and after a quiet opening over, the offspinner had Parthiv bowled on the slog-sweep off the first ball of his second.

Gayle wasn't done yet. He swung Harbhajan for consecutive boundaries in the same over. Rohit persisted with Harbhajan, who sent down a tight third over. Harbhajan was given a fourth on the trot, the first four balls of which went for 12. Gayle attempted a slog-sweep off the fifth, missed and was bowled for 38 off 24.

In walked AB de Villiers and calmly reverse-paddled Harbhajan first ball for four. When Mumbai Indians reprieved both batsmen in the space of four deliveries, it seemed the chances could cost them. Royal Challengers needed 72 off the last eight with Kohli and de Villiers looking good.

However, de Villiers was bowled in the 14th over, missing after having backed too far across to Jasprit Bumrah. Kohli swatted Suyal stright to long-off in the next over. The asking-rate climbed rapidly now. Pollard ran out Yuvraj Singh, and though Rilee Rossouw tried, Royal Challengers had ceded too much ground with all those extras.

Super Kings boss Delhi Daredevils

MATCH 26: Dwayne Smith's fiery 79 made easy work of the 179-run target.

New Delhi (IANS): Dwayne Smith's fiery 79 gave Chennai Super Kings a comprehensive eight wicket win over Delhi Daredevils at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on Monday. This was Chennai's sixth victory on the trot in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

Chasing a challenging Daredevils total of 178/5, the Chennai outfit completed formalities with two balls to spare to hand the home team their third consecutive loss in the tournament. Super Kings openers Brendon McCullum (32) and Dwayne Smith went all out right from the start. The duo clicked and scored a fantastic 82-run opening wicket partnership to get their team off to the perfect start.

New Zealander McCullum was slow but stuck beside Smith, who was in a different world altogether. The West Indian smashed pacer Jaydev Unadkat all over the ground, hitting three consecutive sixes in the fourth over.

After McCullum got out, Suresh Raina also provided good company to Smith, who continued with his flurry of sixes, blasting a total of an incredible eight sixes and four fours in his 51-ball knock of 79 which completely took the game out of the Daredevils' hands. Raina (47 not out) and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (12 not out) completed the innings to give the table toppers a total of 12 points from seven games.

GOOD START

Earlier, opener Quinton de Kock gave the Daredevils a good start with three fours and two sixes in his 16-ball knock of 24. But the South African didn't last long as he was run out after some confusion with Murali Vijay (35).

The hosts were put in a spot of bother when skipper Kevin Pietersen was bowled for a duck two balls later off medium pacer Mohit Sharma. The former England captain completely misread the delivery and offered no shot. Meanwhile, Super Kings bowler Ishwar Pandey maintained good line and length to contain the opposition. From accelerating at a healthy run rate, the Daredevils suddenly slowed down with the fall of the wickets.

But the nature of the Twenty20 format is such that nothing is constant. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik (51) came out to play the anchor's innings and struck an important third-wicket partnership with Vijay for 71 runs. Karthik turned it on for the home team with a flurry of boundaries - four fours and three sixes - to bring up the only half-century of the innings.

Just when it looked like the Daredevils would post a big total, the Super Kings scalped Karthik, Laxmi Ratan Shukla (0) and Vijay (35) in a span of 12 runs. But some big hitting in the slog overs saw the Delhi-outfit post the good total with J.P. Duminy (28 not out) and Kedar Jadhav (29 not out).

Left handed Duminy smashed four consecutive boundaries off Sharma to score 17 runs off the 18th over while Jadhav also hit Sharma for two sixes and a boundary off the final three deliveries of the innings to make it 18 runs from the last over.

Tambe hat-trick collars Kolkata

IPL7, MATCH 25—Kolkata suffered a dramatic collapse to lose by 10 runs at Ahmedabad.

Ahmedabad (IANS):
Leg spinner Pravin Tambe struck the first hat-trick of the season and skipper Shane Watson picked up three wickets to script Rajasthan Royals' 10-run sensational win over Kolkata Knight Riders in their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) match at their newly adopted home, the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera here Monday.

After a 121-run stand between openers Robin Uthappa (65) and Gautam Gambhir (54), Knight Riders suffered a dramatic batting collapse losing six wickets for two runs and could muster only 160 for six in 20 overs while chasing a target of 171.

Knight Riders also became the first team in the history of IPL to lose a match after scoring a century-run stand while chasing a target.

It seemed Knight Riders had the match in their grasp as they were cruising at 121 for no loss in the 15th over. They needed 49 runs from 35 balls as both Gambhir and Uthappa were going great guns. Gambhir smacked six fours and a six in his 34-ball whirlwind knock while Uthappa hit three sixes and five fours during his 52-all stay.

But Gambhir's dismissal triggered a batting collapse as Knight Riders lost six wickets for just two runs and were suddenly reduced to 123 for six.

First it was the triple strike from Watson in the 15th over when he got rid of Gambhir, Uthappa and Andre Russell (1) in five balls to reduce Knight Riders to 122 for three

In the next over, the 42-year-old Tambe picked up his maiden hat-trick in just two legal balls.

Tambe had Manish Pandey stumped by Saju Samson with a wide delivery in the first ball and then took a good catch off his own bowling to get rid of Yusuf Pathan. He completed the hat-trick by dismissing Ryan ten Doeschate with a tossed up delivery that hit the Dutchman's toe for him to be adjudged lbw.

The Knight Riders failed to recover from the deadly blows and it was Shakib-al Hasan's unbeaten 21 in 14 balls that helped them reduce the deficit.

COMPETITIVE TOTAL
Earlier put in, an impressive batting performance by the top-order took Rajasthan Royals to a competitive 170 for six in 20 overs. Opening batsmen Ajinkya Rahane (30) and Karun Nair (44) set the stage with their quickfire 52-run stand in 39 balls.

Rahane struck three fours and a six in his 22-ball knock and was run out in the seventh over with a direct hit from Sunil Narine. Nair and Sanju Samson (37) were then involved in a crucial 53-run stand for the second wicket. The duo not only stole the singles but also ensured that the boundaries kept flowing.

A smart piece of bowling by Shakib (1/25) broke the partnership. Shakib saw Nair coming down the track and fired it full outside the off-stump with the batsmen stranded in the middle of the pitch and wicket-keeper Uthappa did the rest.

Watson then launched a late onslaught with his 31 off 20 balls hitting two fours and two sixes to take them to 170.

Narine was again impressive with his two for 28 while Vinay Kumar conceded 42 runs for two wickets from his four overs.
