Profile

A right-handed batsman and right arm off-break bowler, Glenn Maxwell plays for Victoria in Australia's domestic cricket. He represents Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.

Maxwell's aggressive batting style at any position from an opener to the No.7 slot, handy off-spin bowling & delightful fielding puts him into a mould of a perfect all-rounder. He is also great at judging slower balls and most commonly uses his ‘swivel slog sweep’ to send the ball deep into the stands. The all-rounder shot to fame in 2011 when he scored a record 19-ball half century to lead Victoria to an unlikely victory against Tasmania. But it was his knock of 110 off 52 balls with nine fours and eight sixes for Australian Institute of Sports in the Emerging Player tournament that caught the eyes of Delhi selectors, who signed him for the fifth IPL edition in 2012.

Later that year, Maxwell went on to make his international debut for Australia in a one-off ODI against Afghanistan at Sharjah. In 2013, the Aussie was a surprise pick in the Indian T20 League player auction by Mumbai, who bought him at a whopping million dollars, making him the league's newest million dollar baby. However, he warmed the bench for most parts of the season and played a few games at the end of the tournament. Maxwell did not make it to the same franchise the very next year when he was sold to Mohali.

IPL 2014 Schedule: All Match Fixtures and Complete Time Table of IPL 7

The schedule for 2014 Indian Premier League’s (IPL) has been announced after speculation over the venue due to Lok Sabha elections in India. Bowling worries for Super Kings

When Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni was asked after the Kings XI Punjab game if he thought 205 was a winning score, he replied matter-of-factly: "Well even if you score 205 you also have to take into account that the other team can beat it."

On most days, teams would back themselves to defend 205 but Super Kings were vanquished with such force that the game did not go into the final over. Super Kings should not be too hard on themselves though, for they were beaten by an incredible and audacious innings from Glenn Maxwell and a clinical fifty from David Miller. The bowlers could do little to stop Maxwell's reverse sweeps, switch-hits and lap shots; Super Kings would have needed five more fielders to plug those boundaries. Not every team has a batsman who can play such blinders.

Having said that, there are weaknesses in the Super Kings' bowling. Save for Ashish Nehra, who bowled three overs, the rest conceded more than ten an over. That should call for the inclusion of the West Indies legspinner Samuel Badree, who has a miserly T20 economy rate of 5.08. Super Kings may not let go of Dwayne Smith or Brendon McCullum to accommodate him, which means that one of Faf du Plessis and Dwayne Bravo will have to make way.

Delhi Daredevils are still waiting on Kevin Pietersen's fitness. Pietersen was missed in the opening game when the top order fell early. In both matches, they have depended on JP Duminy to shore up the batting. Their seam bowlers made early inroads against Kolkata Knight Riders, and with the next game being played under lights, they could have more assistance from the conditions. Their win over Knight Riders should be a morale booster after a listless opening game.

Watch out for

Ravindra Jadeja leaked 43 off four overs against Kings XI and in his last five competitive games (from the World T20), he has picked up only one wicket. He has also played just one innings since the start of the World T20. With Super Kings possessing a strong top order, he may not get too many opportunities to bat, which means that he has only his bowling to fall back on. The lack of wickets might worry him.

Jimmy Neesham was expensive in both games for Daredevils, bowling two overs in each and going for 0 for 26 and 0 for 22. Neesham had a good Champions League in 2013, but hasn't made an impact yet in the IPL. Should Pietersen be fit, one of the overseas players will have to make way so there is pressure on him to keep his place.

Punjab pull off another big chase

Maxwell backed up his 95 against Chennai with 89 today.

Lightning has struck twice. After they made mockery of a 200-plus chase in their first match, Kings XI captain George Bailey said this was not going to happen every day, and that his bowlers needed to turn up. The bowlers failed to turn up again, but Glenn Maxwell and David Miller made light of another massive chase. The numbers there were staggering: between them Maxwell and Miller smashed 140 off 64 balls, smocked 12 sixes and reverse-hit and caressed eight fours. What made it better was that this came against the best defenders in the IPL: this was the first time Rajasthan Royals lost after posting 190 or more.

Kings XI had got off to a sluggish start, their promotion of Wriddhiman Saha had backfired, and the asking rate was 10.5, to be maintained over 17 overs, when Maxwell walked. The ask would cross two a ball as soon as in the 10th over, and a struggling - by T20 standards - Cheteshwar Pujara would make it more difficult for Kings XI. Maxwell, though, turned it into a me-v-them, farmed the strike to the tune of 45 balls to Pujara's 23 in the partnership between them, and ran away with the game with 89 off 45.

The innings was full of incredible hitting, preying on one considerably shorter side boundary and the short straight ones. He began by going after Richardson in the fifth over moments after Richardson had failed to latch onto an incredibly difficult return catch to his right. The first ball of the next over he smacked Pravin Tambe over square leg, and then eliminated - for the time being - the other big threat, James Faulkner. It began with the first ball of the over again as he flicked a low fullie for six, but he stunned Faulkner with the fifth ball of that seventh over. Faulkner had every reason to believe he had done Maxwell in with a slower bouncer, but from almost halfway down the pitch Faulkner adjusted and upper-cut him for six.

Tambe and Rajat Bhatia turned pulled things back with their non-turning legrollers, and not much pace to work with. The asking rate shot past 12, and Bhatia began the 11th over with fielders deep on the leg side, and three men behind and around point in the circle. This is when Maxwell in the Mirror made his appearance.

Two reverse-sweeps either side of short third man and one reverse-flick over cover later, Maxwell had gone well past his fifty, and had also brought the asking rate back under control. The next over from Dhawal Kulkarni had a similarly strong leg-side field, and Maxwell produced his touch play again. One upper-cut, one flick, and two gentle pushes past the man at cover brought him 16 runs. And when Maxwell manhandled Bhatia for two sixes in the next over, time had come for Royals to go back to the big guns.

On came Richardson, too much elevation got Maxwell, another century was missed, and Rajasthan were breathing again. They had little clue they were about to jump from the frying pan into the fire, the fire of Miller's 51 off 19. Miller came in with 66 required off 36, which became 60 off 30 with a canny Stuart Binny over, and three dots from Tambe compounded it even further, but now Miller began to pick his deliveries to hit. Even though Tambe bowled the next ball short, Miller smashed him over long-off for six. Pujara sort of took care of the next over with a four and three, and now Kings XI needed 37 from the last three.

Richardson and Faulkner had one each left. Royals went to Kulkarni for the third. They could have gone to Binny, who had cut off all pace, and had conceded just four in his only over. They could have kept Kulkarni back for later, and given him a slightly softer scenario if Faulkner had bowled the 18th and got the asking rate even higher. But these decisions have to be made fast, and Kulkarni it was. Kulkarni's idea was right: he was going full, he was going low, but Miller was murderous. Kulkarni didn't miss his yorkers by much, but Miller hit him for four merciless sixes to end the contest then and there.

Bailey will be pleased he has been proven wrong that such chases don't come about every day, but he will want more from his bowlers and fielders. The bowling was listless, they dropped two catches too, and Sanju Samson and Watson feasted on them. Mitchell Johnson, the leader of the attack, looked dull again, bowling just the one bouncer, with which incidentally he hit the batsman. Looking back, they will think that they had triumphed in not letting them score big fifties, but Bailey is right, these chases don't happen every day. Except when Maxwell and Miller are at their best.

Preview: Match 3 – CSK v KXIP Abu Dhabi set to host King size battle

What

It will be a battle of the Kings when two-time champions and IPL 2013 runners-up Chennai Super Kings square off against Kings XI Punjab in Match 3 of Pepsi IPL 2014.

The MS Dhoni-led CSK are perhaps the most consistent outfit in the IPL; they have contested in the Playoffs in every one of the six seasons so far, have won the championship on two occasions and finished second on three other occasions. The team owners exercised the option of retaining five key players prior to the 2014 Pepsi IPL Player Auction – MS Dhoni, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo, apart from Suresh Raina. As a result, they have maintained the nucleus of the team that has done well over the years. With a calm leader in MS Dhoni on the field and the serene Stephen Fleming managing the players off it, one can be sure that CSK will be best equipped for battle.

KXIP have never made it to the final four since the inaugural season of the IPL. The franchise owners and team management have made some very good buys at the 2014 Pepsi IPL Player Auction and they will be hoping the players they have chosen will be able to deliver the goods.

When

Wednesday, April 18, 2014, 4 pm IST

Where

Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi

The Protagonists

If it is Twenty20 and Chennai Super Kings are the topic of discussion, chances are that Raina’s name will prominently feature in the conversation. The southpaw has featured in every one of the franchise’s matches and has possibly contributed more to the team’s success than any other player. Among the recent acquisitions, Samuel Badree and Brendon McCullum will be the ones to look forward to. There is a good chance that either Faf du Plessis or Brendon McCullum will make it to the playing XI at the expense of Dwayne Bravo, who is said to be nursing an injury he suffered in the recently-concluded ICC World T20.

Kings XI Punjab were immensely impressive in their choice of players at the 2014 Pepsi IPL Player Auction. Along with David Miller and Manan Vohra – who they retained – they have a good mix of Indian youngsters, experienced hands and overseas players with proven credentials. The one player to keep an eye on is Virender Sehwag, who has more than just one reason to deliver the goods; apart from throwing his hat back into the ring as he aims to regain a spot in the Indian team, the Delhi Dasher will also be keen to prove that he still has a lot to offer even if he is no longer the swashbuckling opener of the past.

Since rediscovering his form in IPL 2013, Mitchell Johnson has steamrolled opponents in various formats. He has bowled quick, has been accurate and incisive. And in a format where he has to bowl only four overs, expect him to go full throttle.

Previous Meetings

Including their two victories last season, Chennai Super Kings have an 8-4 win-loss record against Kings XI Punjab.

Trivia

Chennai Super Kings’ Suresh Raina has so far featured in 99 IPL matches. If he takes the field in this match, he will become the first player to bag 100 IPL caps.

Suresh Raina is the top run-getter in the IPL with 2802 runs.

What Next

Kings XI Punjab will be seen in action next at Sharjah on April 20 when they square off against the Rajasthan Royals. Chennai Super Kings will hit the turf next on April 21 when they take on the Delhi Daredevils in the late evening match.
